The  OH–FILM  project addresses the topic of polymeric materials for flexible electronics, one of Europe's Key Enabling Technologies of the 21st Century, and combines efforts and knowledge from organic and polymer chemistry, materials science, physics and chemical engineering to duly tune the optical properties, control the hydrophilic conduct, increase flexibility, and manage dielectric features of innovative materials, and therefore advance knowledge in the field.

OH–FILM’s goal is to find the optimum combination of specific building blocks, macromolecular architectures and physico-chemical treatments to provide a transparent, rather hydrophilic, polymeric material which enables electrode-printing and further acts as the mechanical and insulative support of a bendable electronic device.

The main approach is based on dynamic chemical engineering of polymeric materials (structural changes and concurrent material processing), with a main focus on modulating the compromise between four types of functionalities through carefully chosen chemical and physical tools.

The elements of originality and innovation touch multiple levels and derive from the novel, original design, performance enhancement based on physico-chemical processes and gradual experimental approach in solving key limits and challenges in the field.

A key difference is the focus on the fourfold functionality of the new polymeric materials: simultaneously transparent, hydrophilic, flexible and insulative layers/films.

Based on our previous results, OH–FILM is placed at a TRL 2 value at its beginning and is designed to reach a TRL 4 end value, by following various performance targets.
