Abstract  

         The aim of the project is to obtain chitosan-based formulations for controlled delivery of 5-fluorouracil, designed for local cancer therapy. The hydrogels obtained by the acid condensation of monoaldehyde (P5P) with chitosan will be used as matrices for preparing injectable formulations, by in situ encapsulation of 5-fluorouracil, an anticancer drug. The obtained hydrogels and formulations will be characterized from structural, supramolecular and morphological points of view using adequate equipment. Thixotropic behavior will be monitored by rheological measurements. Also, in vitro studies of enzymatic degradability, biocompatibility, anticancer activity and drug release will be performed. In vivo biocompatibility tests will be achieved by collaboration with “Gr. T. Popa” University.
