The scope of the project is to advance knowledge in metabolic diseases by performing a pilot inborn errors of metabolism screening in Moldova and by exploring the metabolic expression of diabetes complications (retinopathy and steatosis), using NMR Spectroscopy. 

The objectives of the project are the followings:

1. To develop an NMR metabolomic model for urine samples of Moldavian neonates;
2. To estimate the incidence of rare metabolic diseases in Moldova;
3. To develop or improve NMR diagnostic and monitoring techniques for metabolic diseases;
4. To find specific markers for diabetes complications (retinopathy and steatosis) and to advance knowledge in the mechanisms of this pathology;
5. To characterize markers for several local Moldavian plants which in some particular situations could alter the metabolic profile of biological fluids.
6. To train the Moldavian partners in the new NMR metabolomics and lipidomics methodologies;
7. To increase visibility of Romanian and Moldavian science and of the participant institutions through high quality publications.
