Project description

Renal failure is one of the major health problems with which the current society is faced, having a negative impact on the health system due to the disease prevalence. This shortcoming requires new innovations in terms of dialysis therapies, through the approaches/strategies and therapeutic dialysis means that are cost-effective, accessible and that provide improved results for patients.
From this perspective, the project aims to develop a high-performance technology, tested and validated on a laboratory scale, which will ensure an advanced hemodialysis treatment, contributing significantly to the quality and efficiency of systems that address to the human health.

Specific objectives

The general objective of the TechMembrEID project consists in the design and development of new bioactive electrospun membranes - bioactive fibrous membranes based on quaternized polysulfones - with improved characteristics (modeled and controlled morphology, hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance, biocompatibility), which will be used as separation media in an innovative extracorporeal device, which will be tested and validated on a laboratory scale.

  • Formulation and designing of biocompatible functionalized membranes based on quaternized polysulfone (FHM).
  • Optimizarea proprietatilor de suprafata in vederea obtinerii de membrane FHM aplicabile in procesul de dializa.
  • Designing of an innovative extracorporeal device (EID) by integrating the optimized experimental demonstrator (FHM) into a final product.
  • Evaluation of the FHM membranes functionality for medical applications and validation of laboratory technology through the specific tests.

    Stage 1 (2022) - Formulation and development of bioactive functionalized fibrous membranes (FHMs) and designing of an innovative extracorporeal device (EID)

    Activity 1.1 - Establishing the optimal electrospinning conditions by optimizing the obtained rheological parameters
    Activity 1.2 - Obtaining the biocompatible fibrous composite membranes
    Activity 1.3 - Obtaining the biocompatible functionalized fibrous membranes based on quaternized polysulfone (FHMs) by incorporating antioxidants
    Activity 1.4 - Setting the Extracorporeal Innovative Device (EID)
    Activity 1.5 - The results dissemination

    Stage 2 (2023) - Optimizing the surface properties of FHMs membranes and evaluating their functionality in medical applications through integration into the EID device

    Activity 2.1 - Obtaining of functionalized biocompatible fibrous membranes based on quaternized polysulfone (FHMs) by incorporation or immersion in anticoagulant solutions
    Activity 2.2 -Controlling the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance by studying the surface tension and hydration free energy
    Activity 2.3 - Morphological and structural characterization of the obtained FHM membranes
    Activity 2.4 - Membranes testing as biocide and establishing the inhibition mechanism against different types of bacteria
    Activity 2.5 - In vitro screening of FHM membranes for biocompatibility evaluation
    Activity 2.6 - Configuration and commissioning of the proposed innovative extracorporeal device
    Activity 2.7 - Optimizing the operating parameters of the EID device
    Activity 2.8 - Control of the dialysis process
    Activity 2.9 - The results dissemination

    Stage 3 (2024) - Validation/testing and demonstration of the functionality of the EID device with integrated FHMs membranes

    Activity 3.1 - Demonstration of the FHMs membranes functionality for medical applications
    Activity 3.2 - Evaluation of the plasma level of reactive oxygen species
    Activity 3.3 - Hemocompatibility tests
